Day 173 - Mount Cook, New Zealand
Day 173 – 28th November 2005 +13:00 GMT Total Miles 29861
Woke up to find we are being moved to an 8 bed dorm room. The room we are in was apparently booked out before we made our booking. So have to move all our stuff into another room and Jill and I get the bunk nearest the door. I cook and all day breakfast and then we get ready to go on another hike. Today Jill and I decide to do the Hooker Valley walk, which should take 4 hours and takes us to the lake at the foot of Mount Cook. Reece has decided to walk up another mountain to the Mueller Hut.
Mueller Lake
We drive to the car park which is where the walk starts and hike until we reach the Park Monument which shows all the people who have died in the park, there has been loads of deaths over the last 5 years, mostly from people falling and avalanches. We carry on and reach a large swing bridge across the river, the bridge is very narrow and only wide enough for one person.
The First Swing Bridge
Very Narrow Swing Bridge
We cross the bridge and carry on along the path for another 30 minutes then we reach another swing bridge, here we have to walk around the cliffs in single file and then over the bridge.
Second Swing Bridge
Me on Swing Bridge
We reach the Hooker Glacier Terminal lake after about 90 minutes and we sit and relax by the lake looking at the Amazing view of the mountain range with Mount Cook dominating the skyline.

Mount Cook
Hooker Lake
Just as we set back we look across at Mount Sefton and see a huge Avalanche cascading down it’s face, when that almost stops the other side gives way and it is a spectacular view. If you stand around looking you can apparently see small avalanches every 5 minutes, we heard several but only saw one.
Hooker River
We got back to the car after around 3 hours and made our way back to the hostel. We read for a couple of hours and then watched the film American Sweetheart before cooking dinner. After we had eaten we got persuaded by Reece to go to the pub for a quick beer, we obliged but only for one then headed off to bed.
