Day 165 - Queenstown - Milford Sound, New Zealand

Day 165 – 20th November 2005 +13:00 GMT Total Miles 29287

Packed up my bag and checked out of the hostel. Reece was driving today, we drove down highway 6 and after a couple of hours we noticed a steam train stopped on the track. The train was the Kingston Flyer so I took a few photos as my father loves steam trains.

A few more miles down the road and it started raining then pouring. We stopped at Te Anau as where we were heading did not have any shops so we needed to buy some food and fill up with petrol. We decided to have a stir fry so I bought some chicken and Jill got a load of vegetables. We then crossed the road in the torrential rain and ate at a café, the food was awful. We got back in the car and carried on towards Milford Sound. Milford Sound was actually wrongly named as it is a Fiord and not a Sound, the difference being a sound is a valley carved out of the rock by a river and a Fiord is created by a glacier. The sides of the fiord are so high it is impossible to get a perspective on them, due to the rain waterfalls were flowing hundreds of metres down from the rock faces.

On the way we had to travel through Homer Tunnel which is only one lane and is around 2km long and looks like it was hand dug, water was pouring down from the ceiling as we drove through it, I thought it was really cool but Jill was a bit nervous. We arrived at Milford Sound and checked into the lodge there, we had 2 sets of bunk beds and a room between the three of us. Since all power is run on a generator the power is turned off at 11pm so after 11pm it is pitch dark. The kitchen at the lodge was the worst stocked kitchen I had come across so cooking food was entertaining, they had no mugs and only about 6 bowls and very little cutlery. We managed to cook food and eat, then we sat around and played cards for a couple of hours. I then phoned my parents to catch up, whilst on the phone these animals were making a racket. I found out they are Kea which is a type of parrot they are ever so inquisitive and walk right up to you and can peck away at you shoes. We then all went to sleep.
