Day 162 - Queenstown, New Zealand

Day 162 – 17th November 2005 +13:00 GMT Total Miles 29081

We headed into town first thing in the morning as Jill and I had run out of books to read, but books here are too expensive so after a browse we had bought nothing. We then got onto the gondola and went to the top of the mountain overlooking Queenstown.

The Gondola up the Mountain

At the top we did some more luging. This time they only had two tracks, a scenic track and an advanced track both were 800m, although we had fun it seemed as though it went too quick and was not as good as the tracks in Rotorua.

The Luge Track

After we had had our five runs we went and had the 5 star buffet, we got a 2 for 1 deal so it was worth it. For starters I had broccoli and blue cheese soup, next was scallops, king prawns and green mussels, then I had the roast pork with potatoes, vegetables and stir fry. Then for dessert I had chocolate tart, pavlova and chocolate mousse then I had coffee.

We made our way back down in the gondola and asked at the tourist information where the nearest second hand book store was. We found the second hand bookstore after a 10 minute walk and browsed, luckily that had some second hand copies of a couple of books I was looking at, The Time Travellers wife and Life of Pi, so I bought those two and Jill bought, The motorcycle diaries and Dude, where’s my country ?. Reece and I thought we would have a round of golf so drove to a course buy decided $80 each a round was too much for us, so found a cheaper 9 hole course and spent the next couple of hours playing I got round in 58 and Reece in 55.

In the evening we had the free soup from the hostel and I meet a girl called Laura who is so familiar I know her from somewhere, after chatting for a while I found out she is from Deal, in Kent, where my father and grandmother lived as well as many other relatives and she had also spent the last 4 years at bath university living on widcombe hill right next to my best mate James. Still can’t work out where I know her from but hopefully I will remember. Anyway we hooked up with a spanish guy Ibon and we walked into town, Jill, Reece and Ibon headed to a pub and I went to the skycity casino. I spent 4 hours playing blackjack and walked away with $415.50 so not a bad night. When I got back to the hostel we sat in the TV room and chatted for a while and found out Ibon is booked on a similar boat as us next Monday, so he decided to change it so he is on the same boat as us. We agreed to take his rucksack with us and drop it off to him on Monday as he is leaving tomorrow to do a three day walk. Ended up not going to sleep until after 3am.
