Day 171 - Dunedin - Mount Cook, New Zealand

Day 171 – 26th November 2005 +13:00 GMT Total Miles 29852

Up early bag packed and ready to leave by 9:30am, we set off drive up the coast, after about 30 minutes we arrived at Moeraki which we had read has famous boulders and they are not to be missed. We park the car and walk 500 metres along the beach to all the boulders, there are around two dozen and all spherical, some are half sticking out the cliff face and the rest on the beach and in the sea. Some look like they have scales, maybe they are giant dinosaur eggs, we take a few photos and then head back to the car.

We drive until we reach Oamurua where we stop for a quick toastie and a drink, then back in the car and we drive on following this most gorgeous Aqua Blue River. The river has several Dams along it and we stop occasional to take pictures and to see the mountain range in the background.

We arrival at a town called Twizel which is the nearest Petrol Station and Supermarket to Mount Cook. So we shop and fill the car up then carry on. The drive takes us along the side of Lake Tekapo for about another 40km, the lake is the same aqua blue colour as the river and it is just an amazing view.

We check into the YHA hostel which is really nice they have a sauna and a TV room, the kitchen is quite large and well stocked. I cook a large Bolognese and we eat and have a bottle of wine, then we sit in the TV room and watch the classic 80’s film Wall Street. I then go and read before going to bed.
