Day 147 - Napier, New Zealand

Day 147 – 2nd November 2005 +13:00 GMT Total Miles 27683

Once Jill and I were up we decided we would spend the day doing a wine tour. So we phoned up in the morning and booked a half day wine tour with Odyssey Wine Tour company. Spent the rest of the morning hanging around the hostel chatting. At 12:55pm we were picked up by Gareth in a minibus and he had to make one more stop which added a third person to our group. The First Winery we visited was Church Road and we were shown how to correctly taste wine. First swirl it around and get lots of air into it, then take a deep sniff to smell the wine, then hold it against a white background and tip it on it’s side to see how dense the wine is then swirl it around you mouth and taste it. The first place we tried a bubbly, 3 whites and 3 reds. Then we moved onto The Mission winery, now this is a large winery which was started by French monks in the late 1800’s. The building is the same original building and here we tried 8 different wine including an ice wine.

We then moved onto a very small winery called Moana Park, where we were given a tour of the winery then we sat outside and tasted 7 different wines and we were also given a gourmet platter of food to accompany it. We had 3 different Cheeses, some mushrooms, Eel, Venison and Cured Beef, along with bread rolls and 4 different olive oils for dipping. The food was fantastic and so was the wine.

Jill decided to buy a bottle of Malbec, she liked this place as all the wine is approved by the vegetarian society. The last winery of the day was Trinity Hill, here they had 10 different bottles for us to sample. By now we were feeling quite sloshed and I could not really tell the difference between the wines any more. We had a great day and learnt a lot about wine and the surrounding towns. We got back to the hostel just after 5pm and cracked open a bottle of Australian wine. Jill and I cooked up some soup and spent the rest of evening chatting away with the other guests.
