We stopped at Tauranga but due to it being a Saturday lunchtime it was to busy we decided to just drive through. We then drove south on the Highway 29 and stopped about 6km out of Rotorua. We had a bite to eat in a café and a short rest as I had been driving for 3 and half hours. We then made the final bit of the drive into Rotorua and checked into the Funky Green Voyager Hostel. This hostel is very big on recycling and you have to take your shoes off when you enter the building. It is a small hostel with only 20 beds in the main building and 8 others in another building. The communal area and large and everyone seems very friendly. Rotorua stinks of sulphur, as the whole area is on a geothermal plain. This is caused from Volcanic activity, the last volcano went off here in January 2001 and the rising steam and sulphur can still be seen around the city. I took a nap for a couple of hours and then we headed out into the city centre, we found an irish bar and ordered a beer and watched the NPC Rugby Cup Final, Auckland vs Otago. We ordered food and watched the rugby, Auckland took 3 tries in the last 10 minutes to give them a commanding win on 39 – 11. We then headed back to the hostel and Jill and I watched the film Napoleon Dynamite which has become a it of a cult film, although Jill and I could not see why, it was not to good.
